How to check if Steam is down

Click the button above. IsItGoneDown tests store.steampowered.com from a global server and from your browser simultaneously. Community reports from gamers worldwide tell you whether an issue is widespread.

You can also check the community-run SteamStat.us tracker for a detailed breakdown of which Steam services (store, login, game downloads, community) are affected.

Why is Steam not working?

1. Steam store overload during sales

Valve's biggest sales events — the Summer Sale, Winter Sale, and Autumn Sale — attract tens of millions of simultaneous users. During peak sale traffic, the Steam store frequently slows down or becomes temporarily unreachable. This is extremely common and usually resolves within minutes to hours.

2. Steam maintenance

Valve performs regular scheduled maintenance on Steam servers, typically announced in advance. During maintenance windows, some or all Steam services may be unavailable. Check Valve's Steam blog or Twitter for announcements.

3. Login and Steam Guard issues

Steam Guard (two-factor authentication) relies on separate authentication servers. During authentication outages, you may be unable to log in even though the store and game servers are working normally.

4. Game download server issues

Steam's download servers are separate from the store. On major game launch days, download servers can become overwhelmed, resulting in slow download speeds or failed updates even when the store itself is accessible.

5. Firewall or ISP blocking

Steam requires specific ports to be open (27015–27030, 27036, 27015 UDP). Corporate or school networks often block these ports, preventing Steam from working. Your ISP may also occasionally have routing issues to Valve's servers.

6. Corrupted Steam client files

A corrupted Steam installation can cause crashes, failed logins, or inability to launch games — even during periods when Steam's servers are fully operational. Running Steam's built-in repair tool or reinstalling usually fixes this.
